Delegation from City University of Hong Kong Visits Our School

On April 17, our school held a first-time meeting with the delegation led by Ms. Wai Ping Leung, Director of Oversight in the Office of the President at City University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Professor Lei Dangyuan, Deputy Director of the Centre for Functional Photonics (CFP). Chaired by Professor She Wei, Dean of our School, our faculty and student representatives had a meeting to discuss disciplinary development, collaborative innovation in scientific research, international student education, and other key topics.

At the outset, Ms. Wai Ping Leung reviewed the long-standing foundation of friendship between the two institutions. She expressed high expectations for deepening collaboration in relevant fields to achieve mutual benefits and hoped that this visit would elevate the partnership to a new level.

Dean She Wei provided a comprehensive overview of our school from several aspects including the history, disciplinary layout, research platforms, and talent pool. He highlighted our cutting-edge research directions and landmark achievements in materials science, as well as our proactive efforts and phased results in promoting international cooperation. He expressed a strong commitment to deepening ties and pursuing joint development with CUHK.

Professor Lei Dangyuan introduced the current development, research characteristics, priority areas, and talent cultivation models of the materials science discipline at CUHK. He noted that both institutions share similar disciplinary orientations with complementary advantages, promising broad prospects for future cooperation.

Notably, CUHK was the first university in Hong Kong to establish a Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In the 2025–2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings, its materials science discipline ranks 5th globally and 1st in Hong Kong, reflecting its outstanding research strength and extensive international influence. Leveraging Hong Kong’s geographical advantages, our school aims to join hands with CUHK to build an international cooperation network linked with world-class universities. Priority will be given to establishing joint research centers, facilitating faculty and student exchanges, and hosting high-level academic seminars, thereby promoting deeper, more substantive, and effective collaboration.

After the meeting, the CUHK delegation had a tour on the research and teaching facilities in our school.

This visit not only built consensus and expanded the scope of cooperation between the two universities but also served as a pragmatic initiative to implement our school’s “Year of Internationalization” strategy, broaden our global horizons, and enhance the quality of international education.
